It was reported by the C.T.V last night that the cost of pulling out the Canadian citizens, from the war ravaged Lebanon, cost 85 million dollars. It has also been reported that nearly half of the people pulled from the Lebanon have gone back. Did Canada waste our tax dollars by pulling these people out? Also if you leave Canada to live in another country for a lengthy period of time should you loose your Canadian citizenship? |

Absolutely! I'm tired of people who spend half of each year in other countries and maintain a Cdn presence just to ensure that they have a safety net. And this doesn't just include people who have immigrated from other countries, but plain, old Cdn folks who "don't like the cold" or whatever other motivation is given. Perhaps what our government should do is eliminate certain types of coverage and benefits if minimum residency requirements aren't met that require citizens to spend the vast majority of their time in our country every year. Of course, there could be exceptions for people who have to travel as part of their jobs, or for people who take that lifetime dream 6-month trip around the world, but it drives me nuts that our government is spending money to support people who spend their money to prop up economies elsewhere.
Just my two cents - but at least I've spent them here on a great Cdn site =) |

Great question...It pisses me off too that we spent that kind of money "rescuing" people who are basically living in another country...I believe there should have been limitation as to whom was rescued, but putting it in context, there was little time to a) create a policy or b) put policy into effect ... Perhaps our government shall learn from this incident and come up with guidelines as to what rights and privileges do CDN citizens abroad give up after a specified period of time...
Ynaughty had mentioned the Snowbirds...I am not sure I agree with them being added to this group so arbitrarily...Anyone that owns a home or property in Canada and pays taxes here should have the same rights and privileges as the rest of us... |

Well I have to say that I wish more Canadians (REAL Canadians, sorry) would pipe up and finally say what they feel about this whole ridiculous situation. When are we going to stop watching all of our tax dollars go to people who don't live here, some of whom have never lived here, most of whom likely bought their CDN passport at a falafel stand and many of whom only come to Canada when their kids get shot trying to blow up soldiers and civilians! So, a taxpayer in Canada has to wait months to get an MRI but the moment a legitimate government starts bombing terrorists on the other side of the world, thousands of wannabe Canadians LIVING there absolutely must be brought to Canada at our expense on cruise ships & airlines. And they still complain about it! When are Canadians going to decide that enough is enough and stop being held hostage by these people??
