We've heard it all over the news, but when it happens to you it becomes a new reality.
I was very shocked to recieve a call the other day from the bank, they informed me that someone somewhere was able to get the information to duplicate this card.
They told me that someone in Montreal tried to withdraw $800.00 one day and then 400.00 the next. Luckily there wasn't enough money in that account before this card was tagged.
It's all very concerning and scary but worse, it was my teenage daughters card, and they somehow saw her pin number too, the bank said they could have been standing behind her at the time!
Makes me very nervous to use my debit card in the future, you just never know what store these devices are in.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet...albeit there still must be a sense of invasion of your privacy and your daughter's privacy...Glad it wasn't worse... |

Both wifey and I got the same phone call, and not only debit but tehy tried to copy our visa, but they were red flagged at walmart trying to spend 1500 dollars...be very very aware where you use your debit, apparently gas stations are the bigest copying offenders. |

I've made it somewhat of a habit over the past few years to only use cash at gas stations. Even if it means I have to stop at a bank ATM on my way to said gas station.
Another thing you should always do is cover your hand with your other hand when keying in your pin, obstructing any clear view of the PIN you are typing in. I do it automatically now, even in trusted places like Sears, The Bay, Loblaws, etc.... |

Debit cards were supposedly created to simplify money management and give the consumer more flexibility when spendin their money........instead they have become nothin more than a moneymaker for the banks, invasion of privacy in trackin ur spendin habits, they encourage over spendin, overpaying for items or services and of course, another way for a new breed of criminals to silently pick ur pockets......Cash is King......P.S. - I have had a couple of friends victimized in the same manner and it can take weeks if not months to recoup ur money from the banks....... |

We have had our business account hit twice and our personal once.
We don'y use our cards too often off the beaten path so, we can eliminate where the scam occured. The Bank never tells you where it was stolen from but, you can figure it out most times.
Just be aware of what they do with your card..2 swipes is not normal, cancel the transaction and have someone esle go ahead of you. I make a point of asking them why the swiped it twice - the aswer is always the same and for 99.9% of the time true, "it never went through".. Just be cautious...Be aware if the PinPad is not one you have seen before.

I dunno if this happens here but 2yrs ago when I was in Colombia I met this guy whos bank account was drained. The criminals put a scanner on the ATM door so unknowing people would put there card in to open the door (ATM doors in both Bogota and Cali are broken) and the crooks would then get there info and steal there money. |

The more sophisticated the payment mechanism, the more sophisticated the fraud.
A couple of other things to be aware of. There have been several criminal cases in Canada where rogue employees of legitimate retail businesses have been paid to install and monitor dummy POS machines. These machines capture both your PIN and coded bankcard information which is used to manufacture fake debit cards. (There may also be a nearby hidden camera focused on the pinpad.) Many of these have happened at gas stations but other retailers have been affected. In order to encourage cooperation from retailers, the banks will not usually tell you the name of the retailer. (The concern is you wont shop there anymore.)
Other scams involve putting a phony "face" over a legitimate ATM. You think it is a real machine but instead it captures card and PINs.
A further thing to be aware of are phony emails from fake "financial institutions" advising you that your account has been comprimised and asking you to provide your account number and PIN for "verification purposes". These emails look just like the real thing (although sometimes there is a telltale spelling error) and are another way in which a criminal can obtain your personal financial information.
Be wary of "credit protection" insurance from offered by your credit card. In Ontario, if your card is used fraudulently (without your knowledge or consent) the most you would be liable for is $50. The annual inurance premiums are likely more than that.
Its best to be vigilent. Check your bank and credit card statments. You can also set up a flag system with credit reporting agencies such as Equifax or Transunion. For a small fee, they will inform you when anyone makes an enquiry about your credit status or registers a new debt (credit card) under your name. |

Great info nottymilf. I work in a bank/credit union and we were 'hit' on Sept 20 by someone who taped a false front onto our ATM machine. All the customers who used that machine after that, and before they removed it, we hit a week later. Seems like a big fraud in the Newmarket area according to police as well as other citizens (who have been hit at other banks), but you never hear of it in the news.
Just be aware of the looks of any ATM or POS machine, and like suggested, if it's swiped twice, ask! It's true that most have been with gas stations, but I know that there are all other kinds of fraudulent ways of doing things. I even didn't know about the car access at the bank's doors being used! Guess I will have to share that with my manager/staff. Thanks |
